Essential Winter Checklist for Closing Your Pool

30 November 2024

Preparing your pool for winter is an essential task for any pool owner. Proper winterization helps protect your investment from damage, reduces the need for costly repairs, and ensures your pool is ready for use come spring.

In this article, we’ll take an in-depth look at all the steps you’ll need to follow to confidently close your inground or above-ground pool for the season.

1. Balance your pool’s chemistry

Start by testing and adjusting your pool’s chemical levels. Aim for the following:

  • pH: Between 7.2 and 7.6
  • Alkalinity: Between 80 and 120 ppm
  • Chlorine: Between 1 and 3 ppm

Balancing your pool’s chemistry before closing prevents corrosion, scaling, and algae growth during the winter months.

2. Thoroughly clean your pool

Remove all debris using a skimmer and vacuum the pool floor. Brush the walls to eliminate algae and dirt. A clean pool is less likely to develop stains or algae blooms while covered.

3. Lower the water level

Reduce the water level to just below the skimmer for inground pools or a few inches below the top rim for above-ground pools. This step prevents water from freezing in the skimmer or overflowing during the off-season.

4. Protect pool equipment and plumbing

Drain water from your pool’s plumbing lines, pumps, filters, and heaters to prevent freezing damage. Use an air blower or compressor to remove water from the lines. Store detachable equipment, like ladders and skimmer baskets, in a dry, safe location.

5. Add winterizing chemicals

Apply winterizing chemicals, including algaecides and chlorine, to maintain water quality throughout the season. Be sure to follow product instructions to avoid overuse, which can damage your pool’s surface or liner.

6. Install a winter cover

Choose a durable winter cover designed for your pool type and size. Secure it tightly to prevent debris from entering the water. A properly fitted cover protects your pool from weather damage and minimizes cleaning time when reopening in the spring.

Common winterizing mistakes to avoid

Avoid these errors to ensure your pool remains in top condition during the off-season:

  • Skipping chemical balancing, leading to algae growth and water issues.
  • Forgetting to drain plumbing and equipment, risking freeze damage.
  • Using an ill-fitting or worn-out cover, which allows debris and water contamination.
